The Latest & Greatest in Creating Your Awesomeness
Mind over Matter. We've all heard that one before, but what if we put a new spin on how we perceived this phrase? What if we looked at it from the perspective of we must first "conquer" the mind before we worry about the matter? This is not to say that you need extensive therapy in order to lose a few pounds (please don't hesitate to seek out therapy if you think you need it though!), but rather consider the foundation or root or source of anything needs to be sturdy. Your mind is conceptually similar.
Think of your mind as the roots of a tree, without a solid root system your tree will not stand. Look what happened when my neighbour cut away too much of the root system of this tree and a storm came along!
You simply won't do a workout routine for very long if you're mind isn't strong and disciplined to do what you tell it "we're doing today". As soon as you have a day when you don't feel like it, you'll listen to the crap your mind tells you about being tired, being unable to achieve your goal and being a failure because your results aren't fast enough, not having the time, etc.
And you know this must be true because how many things is this true of? It's not just your workout routine I'm sure!
There's this great quote I've seen online that says "Tell the negative committee that meets inside your head to sit down and shut up." But when you try to do that often it retorts more loudly. What is one to do? One of my favourite tricks to begin training your mind to be more obedient is to turn it down. When you catch it giving you grief, belittling, or trying to sabotage, turn it down to "department store volume" (you hear it if you pay attention but can just as easily tune it out) and do what it is you have to do. This will take practice and conscious awareness of that nasty negative committee.
Having trouble winning over the negative committee on your own and need more tools? Having the accountability and expertise of a coach means you'll actually achieve your Fitness, Wellness and Lifestyle goals. A client was recently talking about how beans are boring and lack flavour, and then admitted they really didn't know any good ways of preparing them. I think that's behind a lot of people's apprehension with beans, that and well, the gas. This month we've got resolutions for both:
Caribbean black beans
1 cup of dried black beans soaked for at least 4 hours (no it's not hard, put them in a much larger cup and cover with lots of water, they'll swell up)
1 medium cooking onion
2 cloves of garlic
1/2 an orange thoroughly washed before cutting open
4 all spice berries (1/4 tsp ground)
3 whole cloves (small pinch ground)
1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
1 tbsp coconut sugar (or brown sugar)
Salt and Pepper to taste
1. Rinse the black beans until all the water is clear (lots of rinsing helps get rid of the indigestible gas producing part of the beans).
2. Juice the orange, keep the rind.
3. Add beans to a pot with onion, garlic, juice, rind, and all the spices, leaving out sugar, salt, and pepper.
4. Add 2.5 cups of water to the pot and bring to a boil uncovered.
5. Cover and simmer stirring occasionally, until beans begin to get very soft and starts getting creamy (about an hour). If it's still really watery uncover for a bit and continue to simmer.
6. Towards when the beans are done (just taste one, do you like it or is it too hard? That's how you know) add the sugar salt and pepper. These can arrest the cooking of the beans so don't add them beforehand.
7. Cook for a few more minutes so the flavours can all blend nicely then eat it! See? Beans are flippin' yummy, OOOOOMMMMM Nom Nom!
Serving Tip: Add as a filling for wraps instead of a meat or as a side dish for breakfast, lunch or dinner!

In celebration opening of the Wellness Room. Iadmit it, the reason I haul all the Thai Massage equipment up and down the stairs is because the "Wellness Room" isn't well, it's full of junk. And it HAS TO go. It is a big project to make it a little sanctuary, but I've promised myself, and now you, that by April 1st "the caution room" (there is actually caution tape wrapped around the door!), will be a thing of the past and there will be a perfectly cozy space to receive Thai Massage and energy work.
