The Latest & Greatest in Creating Your Awesomeness!
There is a big HOWEVER though: holidays and recreation as I mentioned in last week's Awesomeness Update literally re-CREATE us. In fact, not just re-creating they do lots of "re"-ing for us.
REJUVENATE: Both taking time off for holidays, or sweating it out, or enjoying a game or hobby allows us to REcharge, leaving us feeling more youthful and vibrant.
RELAX: Even if your recreational activity is a high-intensity sport, like Ultimate Frisbee for example, we are in a state of mental and spiritual relaxation, while physically we may not be relaxing, other aspects of our being are getting the time they need to enjoy and unwind. After all, Westerners aren't getting enough physical stimulation most of the time, and too much stimulation in the other realms of being... unless you're never overthinking anything, from your to-do list to what to make for dinner to how you'll ask your boss for a raise . Now if you were concerned your holiday is too active you know you'll be getting exactly what you need!
REFLECT: Further to over-stimulation in the inner realms of being (mental, emotional, spiritual), when we have the opportunity to just be and do what we would like, there is actually time to reflect on, and not just REact (the only "re" we want to avoid here!) to life, to enjoy the beauty of calculated choices. It's an excellent time to REvise or REcreate your goals and make sure you're on track with your plans and projects. While reflecting might not be team sport material, holiday time and solo recreational sports and activities (from running to gardening to the less conventional like tree climbing) all allow plenty of room for reflection.
RELATE: If you're not hiking solo through Alaska then you will probably also have time to relate, spending time with others: family, old friends, and even new acquaintances allows us perspective and the opportunity to share the human experience... especially if you're relating while recreating!
How are you REcreating yourself this summer? Taking a holiday on a resort beach or travelling in lands exotic? A staycation perhaps? Cottaging or camping? Adventure, or everything but for you? Maybe you're just hanging out on the deck or balcony on weekends. Share with us in the comments below!
If you're REthinking your choice not to get this kind of awesomeness on a weekly basis subscribing to the Awesomeness Update is just a click away!
SELECT A GREEN
There are all of the classics like the baby greens, lettuces, cabbage, and arugula. But did you know that most greens can be eaten raw? Some that are tougher when they're full grown are best either massaged (yup massaged until it becomes more tender) or eaten as a younger green. Think collards, kale, and Swiss chard. Think outside the box: you probably know that you can eat dandelion greens, lambsquarters, beet and turnip greens, so don't forget them. Some you may not know about or might be neglecting are things like bok choy, watercress, and sprouts like sunflower or alfalfa (you can even grow these easily at home)
ADD SOME FUN
Again, we often think salads are boring because creativity stays out of the mix for too long. Think beyond the cucumber, tomato, peppers, or carrot. Add radish for some spicy crunch, why not throw in broccoli or cauliflower? Corn is fun, so is sweet potato. Raw, cooked, snap or snow peas. Add some Asian flair with water chestnuts, bamboo, baby corn, or any of the fun and funky mushrooms like wood ear. And while dried cranberries or walnuts may have come to mind, most fresh or dried fruit, nuts and seeds all make healthy and tasty, additions as well as providing varying textures. And while I'm not going to tell you that tortillas or need fried noodles are the best thing to add to a salad, if you keep it to a tablespoon or two it will add some flavour and crunch without harm, assuming you're not sensitive to corn or gluten respectively, then you might want to try some toasted coconut ribbons.
BUILD IN SOME PROTEIN
Of course we think of eggs, tuna, chickpeas, and chicken as good things to add to salads, but it doesn't end there! Any kind of bean, meat, seafood, or faux meat can be a tasty addition. Above you see sweet and spicy tofu from Ying Ying Soy Food, (they're not paying me for this, I love their products!)
First of all STOP! buying salad dressing. It's often pretty crappy, and when it's not it's still overpriced and not as good as what you can make at home, even if you've never made it before. You can look up recipes, but some basics to getting started and being creative are right here:
60% Oil: Olive, Flax, Avocado, cold-pressed vegetable or seed oils, sesame, peanut or other nut oils.
30% Acid: vinegars of the white regular, rice, balsamic, wine, or any other varieties. Soy sauce, tamari Lemon, lime, or any other citrus. Berries are a good acid substitute or can also go in to the Yummy Flavour realm.
10% Yummy Flavours: mustard, berries, ginger, garlic, onion, shallot, jams, preserves, citrus zests, tahini, peanut, nut or seed butters, fresh or dried herbs and spices of any kind.
Seasoning to taste.: salt and pepper. Sometimes the acidity needs balancing out with a small amount of sweetener. If you want it to add no flavour then sugar is best, but has ZERO health benefit, why not try a wildflower honey or maple syrup? I really like maple in Asian-inspired dressings.
You were saying something about salads being boring? And I didn't even get into the condiments, the various ways you could prepare the proteins or veggies that go on top! Get creative and salads will only ever yield thoughts of OOOOOOMMMMMMM Nom Nom!
